Almost every visitor who is heading for the Costa Blanca flies into Alicante Airport before making the onward trip to their resort or starting point for their holiday. Those in the know can vouch for the seemingly endless beauty of the 200km stretch of the Costa Blanca and the innumerable beauty spots, places and sights to see when venturing out of their resort and exploring the coast. Only with car hire can you explore its fruits at a pace which suits you and will work out much more cost-effective than taking an organised tour by coach.
Alicante itself is a pretty coastal city that has a good number of shops, department stores, sights to see and a beach in close proximity. The Castle of Santa Barbara is arguably its most famous treasure. Ranking as one of Spain’s largest fortresses, you will get exceptional panoramas from its walls. Also be sure to visit the Castle of San Fernando, the Archaeological Museum, the Museum of Fine Arts and of course the quaint old town with its collection of market stalls and shops.
Denia to the north of Alicante is immense. Here you will find a beautiful harbour, boutiques, awesome golf resorts and restaurants. More treasures are found to the south. The village of Javia again has a picturesque harbour lined with restaurants and bars as well as a famous jewellery museum and the pretty Iglesia de San Bartolome, which sits on top of a cliff above the coast. Calpe a little further along the N332 coastal road has some of the prettiest beaches on the Costa Blanca and is where you will see the famed Penon de Ifach rock formation which can be seen from miles around.
Benidorm is of course synonymous with package holidays, resorts, beaches and its busy nightlife. However, it is also a clever destination to bring children to thanks to the number of excellent waterparks. Torrevieja is a little quieter than Benidorm which is reflected in its more unspoilt beaches and again features a number of waterparks. However, the ultimate destination when touring the Costa Blanca is to the city of Murcia. This major city is just 75km from Alicante and has a number of great historic sites to see including the astonishing Cathedral de Santa Maria, countless museums, Moorish castles and some of Spain’s finest beaches.
